Before heading out on the Mohawk, it's important to check the conditions to make sure it's safe.
A great place to start is the USGS page with current water level/discharge at Riverlink Park, Amsterdam. You can see current trends-usually it's right around 20 feet.

Another place to check before heading out is the Canal Notice to Mariners. This is current notices and advisories to people navigating the Canal system. An important thing to note is that if the Canal is closed, it's definitely not safe to be kayaking. You can sign up to get email alerts of any updates.
Avoid paddling 100 feet in front of the movable dams and exercise caution around the western end of Bronson Island (closest to Lock 11) as the water can be difficult to navigate, especially if there has been recent rainfall.
It's a good idea to have a weather app on your phone that alerts you if any storms are on their way. Conditions can change quickly and it's important to stay alert.
